Gambhir okay with Shreyas as T20I captain

Gautam Gambhir has no reservations over Shreyas Iyer becoming India’s T20I captain at the expense of Suryakumar Yadav, RevSportz understands. The latter is set to be removed from the Indian team despite leading the side to a T20 World Cup triumph less than three months ago. The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar has decided to move on, with Surya going through an elongated form slump. Shreyas is considered to be a perfect replacement, with Tilak Varma his deputy. And Gambhir, the head coach, it is learnt, is okay with it.

There’s a perception, especially on social media, that Gambhir and Shreyas have a mutual dislike. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” said a source in the know. “Gambhir has absolutely no problem with Shreyas becoming the next captain. Obviously it’s a call to be taken by the selectors. If they pick Shreyas, Gambhir would be perfectly fine with it.”

Certain back stories suggest that Gambhir and Shreyas had gelled well earlier. During the 2018 IPL, when Gambhir had stepped down mid-season as Delhi Daredevils’ captain, he recommended to then franchise head coach Ricky Ponting that Shreyas should be his successor. The Daredevils top brass of the 2018 vintage would attest to this. Gambhir’s suggestion was taken on board.

In 2024 also, with Gambhir as Kolkata Knight Riders mentor and Shreyas as their captain, the two worked in tandem to take KKR to glory. Gambhir had no role in the franchise not retaining their title-winning captain ahead of the 2025 IPL mega-auction. Insiders say that it was down to the KKR management and Shreyas failing to come to an agreement over the player’s retention price.

“Shreyas has been made the ODI vice-captain under Gambhir as head coach. Any suggestion of the two not going along well is off the mark,” said the source.

Meanwhile, T20I squad selection is on Saturday in Mumbai.
